Frequently Asked Questions
Your Guide to Working With Sterling Total Wealth
Q: How are you compensated, and what are my all-in costs?
A: We believe in complete transparency. Our fees are typically based on a percentage of the assets we manage, and in certain cases we offer flat or project-based planning fees. We clearly outline all costs before moving forward so you understand exactly what you are paying and what you are receiving. There are no hidden charges and no surprise commissions driving our recommendations.
Q: Are you independent or employed by a larger firm?
A: We are an independent firm. That means we are not employees of a bank or large brokerage company with sales quotas or proprietary products. Our independence allows us to focus solely on what is best for our clients without corporate pressure influencing recommendations.
Q: What makes Sterling different from other advisors?
A: We combine independence, fiduciary responsibility, and decades of experience with a deeply personal approach. We focus on guiding clients through life’s transitions — retirement, business changes, family milestones, and legacy planning — not just managing accounts. Our clients value the consistent relationship, open communication, and steady guidance we provide through every stage of life.
Q: What qualifications do you hold, and how long have you been advising clients?
A: Our team brings more than 80 years of combined experience. We hold advanced credentials including CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and Retirement Income Certified Professional (RICP®). In addition to decades of industry experience, we are committed to ongoing education and maintaining high professional standards.
Q: What do I need to bring?
Our initial meeting is a time for us to get to know one another. Just bring yourself! When you decide to work with us, we typically request the following documents:
- Most recent tax return
- All loan statements
- Current credit card statements
- Current investment account statements
- Current bank account statements
- Any life, disability, or long-term care insurance policies
- Most recent Social Security statement
- Pension statements
- Estimated monthly budget/expenses
- Most recent paycheck stubs
Q: Do you act as a fiduciary?
A: Yes. We act as fiduciaries, meaning we are legally and ethically obligated to place your interests first. Every recommendation is made with your goals and best interests in mind.
Q: Do I need a financial advisor, or can I do this myself?
A: Some individuals choose to manage finances independently. However, many find significant value in having experienced guidance, particularly during major life transitions or complex financial decisions. Our role is to provide clarity, structure, and long-term perspective — helping you avoid costly mistakes and move forward with confidence.
